Gamon Ranges in South Australia. This image was taken at the end of a prolonged drought
The following photos are a random selection taken in various states of Australia. Most of the time they are taken using the available daylight en-route to somewhere, or at a campsite.
Vast areas of inland Australia have poor and transient soil. No trees can survive here. Near lake Kati-Thanda (Eyre) SA
Some inland fences are hundreds of Km long. This is the gate out of Gammon ranges Nat. Park. SA. Most well used roads also have a grid at the fence. Those gates are have been unhinged for quite a while.
Gibber plain Sturt NSW. I know there is a Gibber bird somewhere out there.
Distant hills Leigh Creek SA. Panorama. The structures of humans are few but obvious.
Distant hills Leigh Creek SA. Framed by a long gone sign. I think it said 'no photography'

Heat haze distorts the frame of this shed. Note how the effect is stronger nearer the ground.

The following images look at the way light behaves as it passes through air of differing densities on its way to our eyes. Mirages occur when light is refracted away from its straight path, thus the contents of that light look out of place. Most Mirages are inferior, that is the effect is seen below the actual horizon. These are usually associated with heat in the air. Sometimes but much less often we can see superior Mirages where the effect is above the actual horizon. The center image below is an example of this, and these are associated with cold air. In this case the inverted sand dune was refracted along the earths curvature from over the horizon. Once this Mirage was dissipated by the warming air the horizon was dead flat as can be seen about one third the way up in this image
The earths curvature and the reflected ship in an inferior mirage make it look like its sinking.
A Fata Morgana Mirage. Everything above the flat horizon is a projection, some of it inverted.
The sky invades the land, in this inferior mirage. Strong heat haze adds local distortions.
